My story
Languages have always been at the heart of my life.
My name is Milena Filippi, and I’m a native French translator and transcreator based in Cologne, Germany. I help businesses, agencies, and organizations communicate naturally and effectively with French-speaking audiences through specialized translation, localization, transcreation, proofreading, and machine translation post-editing (MTPE).
My journey has taken me from a multicultural childhood in France to a professional career in Germany, combining academic expertise with hands-on experience across the legal, medical, and marketing sectors.
My journey
Growing up in a multicultural family
Growing up in a multicultural family in northeastern France, I was surrounded by languages from an early age. That environment sparked my passion for literature, the French language, and discovering new cultures through language learning.
B.A. in English & German Languages and Cultures
I earned a Bachelor's degree in Bilingual and Bicultural Languages, Literature and Foreign Civilizations (English & German) at the Université de Lorraine. Alongside my studies, I explored French Sign Language, Polish, and Italian, strengthening my passion for languages and leading me to pursue a career in translation.
French Teaching Assistant
After moving to Germany, I worked for two years as a French teaching assistant and trained as a DELF examiner and assessor. Teaching deepened my appreciation for language, communication, and cultural exchange.
B.A. Multilingual Communication and M.A. Specialized Translation
At Cologne University of Applied Sciences (TH Köln), I earned a Bachelor's degree in Multilingual Communication and a Master's degree in Specialized Translation, building expertise in translation, localization, terminology management, and language technologies.
E-commerce & Outdoor Industry
While studying, I worked as a French translator, localizing e-commerce content and product descriptions for the French market.
Medical Translation
I later specialized in medical and healthcare translation at DocCheck GmbH, gaining extensive experience in medical terminology and quality assurance.
Freelance Translator & Transcreator
Today, I help businesses, agencies, and organizations communicate naturally with French-speaking audiences through legal, medical, and marketing translation, transcreation, website localization, proofreading, editing, and MTPE. Every project is delivered with precision, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
Human Expertise in the Age of AI
AI can translate words. A professional translator translates meaning, intent, and culture.
Artificial intelligence and machine translation have become remarkably powerful tools. For certain tasks, such as understanding the general meaning of foreign-language content, AI can be fast, convenient, and effective.
But translation is not simply about replacing words from one language with words in another. When accuracy, nuance, cultural relevance, and intent matter, human expertise remains essential.
Language is shaped by context, culture, humour, emotion, tone, and countless subtleties. A sentence can be technically correct and still sound unnatural, convey the wrong message, or fail to connect with its audience. AI can process enormous amounts of linguistic data, but it does not understand language and culture in the same way people do.
Technology Meets Human Expertise
I see AI and translation technology as valuable tools, not replacements for professional translators. Used wisely, they can support the translation process and improve efficiency and consistency. Used without human judgement, they can turn into a costly shortcut.
Ultimately, professional translation is about more than getting the words right. It is about understanding what they mean, why they were written, and how they will be perceived.
AI can process language. Human expertise gives it meaning.
